What is Direct Variation?

Direct variation means two quantities rise and fall together in a fixed ratio: doubling x doubles y. The ratio is the constant of variation k, and the relationship is y = kx.

How it works

Whichever of the three values is missing is solved from y = kx: k = y/x when x and y are known, y = kx when x and k are known, and x = y/k when y and k are known. The finished equation is shown so the rate is explicit.
