What is A4 ↔ Letter?
A4 and Letter are close enough to look interchangeable and different enough to ruin a print run. A4 is 210 × 297 mm; Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm, which is wider and shorter, and 3.3% smaller in area. Printing A4 content onto Letter at 100% therefore crops a strip off the bottom, and printing Letter onto A4 crops the outer edges — while “fit to page” quietly shrinks everything by around 5%, which is small enough to go unnoticed and large enough to change the apparent font size of a whole document.
How it works
Both sheets are compared on each axis, giving the scale that fills the sheet and the scale that fits inside it; the smaller of the two is the value to enter in a print dialog when nothing may be lost. The tool reports both, plus the area ratio and the resulting content size at whatever scale is currently set, and states plainly whether the page would be cropped. Because the two directions are not symmetric — A4 to Letter is a reduction on one axis and an enlargement on the other — both are tabulated side by side.
