Booklet Page Calculator
Work out booklet sheet counts and the saddle-stitch imposition order for any page count.
What is Booklet Imposition?
A folded sheet always shows four pages, so a booklet's page count is rounded up to the next multiple of four and the pages added to get there have to be blank. That is the easy half. The hard half is imposition: the pages cannot be printed in reading order, because folding brings the outer edges of a sheet together in the middle. The outermost sheet of a saddle-stitched booklet carries the last page and the first page on its front, and each sheet inward moves one page in from each end, so a 16-page booklet's first sheet front is page 16 and page 1.
How it works
The page count is rounded up to a multiple of four, the sheet count is that figure divided by four, and the imposition order is generated for each sheet: front carries the last page of the remaining range and the first, back carries the two pages just inside them. The pad pages needed to reach the multiple of four are reported rather than absorbed, so it is clear which pages will be blank, and the spreads are given both as a table and as an imposition sheet that prints with the rest of the page hidden — the format a print shop or a photocopier's booklet mode actually wants.
