Inductor Calculator
Energy stored in an inductor, and series or parallel equivalents.
What is Inductor?
An inductor stores energy in a magnetic field in proportion to the square of the current through it, and the ½LI² that holds is the electrical analogue of a spring's ½kx². Two questions are asked of one in a first course: how much energy it is holding, and what a set of them comes to — and the second is the mirror image of capacitors, because inductors combine exactly like resistors. Series adds, parallel adds reciprocals.
How it works
The energy mode evaluates ½ × L × I² with the inductance entered in milli-henries. The network mode sums the values for a series string, or sums the reciprocals for a parallel bank with the reciprocal form rather than the two-component shortcut, and reports each inductor's share. Because the current is squared, doubling it quadruples the stored energy — which is why the flyback spike from an inductor that is switched off is so much larger than its steady-state rating suggests.
