Cantilever Beam Calculator
Tip deflection and fixed-end moment for a cantilever with a point or uniform load.
What is Cantilever Beam?
A cantilever carries load back to a single fixed end. That changes two things at once: the moment peaks at the wall rather than at midspan, and the beam is in hogging over its whole length — tension on top, compression underneath — which is why a shelf bracket, a balcony and a carport all put their material where a simply supported beam would not. For the same span and load a cantilever also deflects about sixteen times as much as a simply supported beam, so it is deflection, not strength, that usually sizes it.
How it works
A tip point load P gives a wall moment of P·L and a tip deflection of P·L³ ÷ (3·E·I); a uniform load w gives w·L² ÷ 2 and w·L⁴ ÷ (8·E·I). The page reports the tip deflection, the fixed-end moment and shear, and the single reaction, and checks the deflection against L/180 — the tighter limit cantilevers are commonly held to, because there is no second support to share the sag.
