Tile Calculator
Tiles needed for an area, with grout lines included in the layout.
What is Tile?
Tiles are laid on a pitch of tile-plus-grout-line, not tile alone, so the count is area ÷ (tile + grout)² in matching units. The grout matters more as tiles get smaller: 12-inch tiles with a ⅛-inch line add about 2%, but a mosaic of 2-inch tiles with the same line adds over 12%. Tile is brittle in transit and in cutting, so a waste allowance of 10% (straight), 15% (diagonal) or more is standard — prefilled, editable.
How it works
The area is converted to square inches, multiplied by the waste factor, and divided by the pitch area (tile + one grout line in each direction). The result is rounded up to whole tiles, and the effective pitch is shown so the layout can be checked against the room's actual dimensions.
