What is Speaking Time?

Reading time and speaking time are different measurements, and the difference is why talks overrun. Silent reading runs at 200–250 words per minute; speaking to an audience runs nearer 110–160, because delivery adds pauses, emphasis and the time it takes to breathe. A ten-minute slot built from a reading-time estimate therefore needs noticeably fewer words — the same script read silently is several minutes shorter than it is spoken.

How it works

The words are counted once by the category's shared tokeniser and divided by the chosen speaking pace to give seconds, displayed as minutes and seconds. Three paces are offered — slow/deliberate near 110 words per minute, conversational near 140, fast near 160 — and the whole script is timed at each of them, because the pace a presenter actually settles into is often not the one they planned.
