What is Rounding?

A flexible rounding tool with two modes: decimal places for everyday values and step rounding for pricing/inventory (nearest 0.05, 5, 10…).

How it works

Decimal mode uses scale-then-floor arithmetic; step mode divides by the step, rounds, and multiplies back — with banker's rounding as an option.

  1. Enter your input. Type or paste your input into the field above — the tool responds instantly.
  2. Review the result. Output updates live as you type. Everything runs entirely in your browser.
  3. Copy or download. Use the Copy button to grab the result, or Download to save it as a file.

Examples

Rounding modes

Round 2.675 to two decimals — half-up gives 2.68, half-even gives 2.68 too, but round 2.685 and the two modes diverge. The tool shows which mode you're using.

Common mistakes

Floating-point surprises

2.675 is stored as 2.6749999… in binary, so naive rounding can give 2.67. The tool rounds on the decimal representation to avoid this.

Frequently asked questions

Which rounding modes exist?

Half-up, half-down, half-even (banker's), floor, and ceiling — each selectable and explained.

Why would I use half-even?

Banker's rounding avoids the upward bias of always rounding .5 up, which matters in statistics and finance.
