Line Spacing Calculator
Work out line height in points and millimetres, lines per page and pages needed.
What is Line Spacing?
Line spacing is expressed as a bare multiplier, which is why the same “1.5” can mean two different amounts of paper in two different tools. The multiplier applies to the single-spaced height of the type, and a single-spaced line of a given point size is conventionally 1.15 times that size — the ratio Word and Google Docs use — so 12 pt at 1.5 lines is 20.7 pt of vertical space, not 18 pt. Until that chain is converted into points and millimetres it is a ratio with nothing to measure it against.
How it works
The line height is the point size times 1.15 times the spacing multiplier, the total height is that times the number of lines, and lines per page divides the printable text height — the paper less the margins you set — by the line height. Rounding up gives the page count, and the sheet is also reported in millimetres and inches so the vertical space can be checked against a physical page. A table compares single, 1.5 and double spacing for the same line count, which is where the cost of a spacing change becomes concrete.
