What is Font Size → Pages?

Changing the point size is the classic way to meet a page limit, and the effect is bigger and more counter-intuitive than it looks: type that is 11/12 as tall also sets 11/12 as wide, so the words that fit scale by the square of the size ratio. Dropping from 12 pt to 11 pt buys about 19% more words per page, not 9%, and 12 pt to 10 pt buys 44%. Line spacing, by contrast, is exactly linear — single instead of double very nearly doubles the words on a page.

How it works

The words-per-page figure for each configuration is taken from the lookup table and the page count is the word count divided by it. Two tables are rendered: every point size at the chosen spacing, and every spacing at the chosen size. Adjacent rows are shown deliberately, because the realistic decision is one point or one spacing step, and the tool also reports how many pages the neighbouring setting would save — the number the decision is actually made on.
