What is PDF Page Sizes?

Knowing what paper a PDF was made for is the difference between a clean print run and a set of scaled or cropped pages, and the answer is not always in the file's properties. What matters is each page's own media box, because documents assembled from a scan, a print-to-PDF and an exported chapter routinely carry pages of three different sizes while declaring one. Mixed page sizes are the specific fault a print scaling setting cannot fix, since “fit to page” resolves each page separately and the resulting print is subtly inconsistent throughout.

How it works

The file is read in the browser with pdf.js and never uploaded — which the page states, because “upload your PDF” is a request people are right to be wary of. Every page is opened and its viewport measured at a scale of one, giving dimensions in points, which are converted to millimetres and inches for display. Each measurement is compared with the ISO A-series within a millimetre and a half to name the standard size, and the set of distinct sizes across the document is checked: one size is reported as consistent, several are listed as a warning with the scale factors needed to bring the opening page in line with A4 and Letter.
