Absolute Value Calculator
Find the absolute value of a number or an arithmetic expression.
What is Absolute Value?
The absolute value |x| of a number is its distance from zero on the number line, which is why it is never negative: |−4| and |4| are both 4. The bars are not a type of bracket you can remove — they change the value when what is inside is negative, which is exactly what makes absolute-value equations split into two cases.
How it works
The input is evaluated as an arithmetic expression (numbers, + − × ÷, brackets and unary signs, parsed rather than passed to eval) and then the sign is stripped. The sign of the evaluated input is reported alongside the answer, because "the minus sign disappears" is a property of that sign rather than a rounding step — and division by zero or an unbalanced bracket is reported instead of being guessed at.
