What is Average?

The arithmetic mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are — the measure of centre most people mean by "the average". It uses every value, which makes it the most informative average when the data is symmetric and the most misleading one when it is not: a single extreme reading moves it further than any other measure of centre.

How it works

One pass over the list accumulates the sum and the count, and the mean is their ratio. Because the same engine call produces the median, the range and the standard deviation, the page can show the comparison that matters — how far the mean has been pulled away from the middle of the data — rather than leaving the reader to compute it on another page.
