What is Factors?

A factor of n divides it exactly, with no remainder: the factors of 60 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 and 60. Factors come in pairs that multiply to n, with one member of each pair at or below √n — which is why the count is even unless n is a perfect square, and why factoring is trial division up to √n rather than up to n.

How it works

Every integer up to √n is tried as a divisor, and each divisor d found there comes with its partner n ÷ d, so the whole list is one loop rather than two. The prime factorization is the same divisors with the repeats collected as powers (60 = 2² × 3 × 5), and the divisor count, the pair count and the factor list are three views of one result — so they cannot disagree the way three separate calculations could.
