Quartile Calculator
Find Q1, Q2 and Q3, the values that cut a data set into quarters.
What is Quartiles?
The quartiles cut sorted data into four equal parts: Q1 has a quarter of the values below it, Q2 is the median, and Q3 has three quarters below it. Together with the minimum and maximum they form the five-number summary, which is the whole content of a box plot.
How it works
The method is Tukey's hinges: the data is split around the median, the median itself belonging to neither half for an odd count, and each half's median is taken. All three quartiles are computed in the same engine call that the interquartile range and outlier pages use, so a fence is always built from the quartiles reported here. The page names the rule because linear interpolation and median-of-halves can shift Q1 and Q3 by half a position on identical data.
