Median Calculator
Find the median of a list of numbers, with the odd and even cases shown.
What is Median?
The median is the middle value once the data is sorted: half the values sit below it and half above. Unlike the mean it ignores how far away the extremes are, which is why income, house prices and waiting times are usually reported as medians — one billionaire does not move a median.
How it works
The list is sorted, then the middle is taken directly for an odd count or averaged across the two central values for an even one. The page highlights which positions those were, because the even case is where a hand calculation usually goes wrong: there is no single middle value, so "the median" is a number that may not appear in the data at all.
