What is Fraction Strips?

Fraction strips are equal-width bars split into halves, thirds, quarters, sixths and so on. Because the bars are the same length, equivalent fractions sit directly above and below one another, making ½ = 2⁄4 = 3⁄6 visible instead of asserted.

How it works

Each strip is one whole divided into its denominator, and every strip is drawn at the same physical width, so the pieces align vertically. Segment labels are dropped automatically when a part becomes narrower than a few millimetres, which keeps a dense set of sixteenths legible, and strips can be printed blank for students to shade themselves.
