What is NanoID?

A NanoID generator using the same 64-character URL-safe alphabet as the popular library, with crypto-safe randomness.

How it works

Each character is drawn from the NanoID alphabet using crypto.getRandomValues bytes, with a configurable length (default 21).

  1. Enter your input. Type or paste your input into the field above — the tool responds instantly.
  2. Review the result. Output updates live as you type. Everything runs entirely in your browser.
  3. Copy or download. Use the Copy button to grab the result, or Download to save it as a file.

Examples

Compact database keys

Generate a NanoID for a database key or URL slug — around 21 characters from the URL-safe alphabet.

Common mistakes

Shrinking the length

Shorter IDs are more guessable. Keep 21+ characters for public identifiers and reduce length only for internal, low-risk uses.

Frequently asked questions

What alphabet does NanoID use?

A URL-safe 64-character alphabet (A-Za-z0-9_-), so IDs work in URLs and filenames without escaping.

How does it compare to UUID?

NanoIDs are shorter and URL-safe by default; UUIDs are standardized with wider ecosystem support. Both are fine for uniqueness.
