What is ULID?

A ULID tool: generate lexicographically sortable identifiers or decode an existing ULID's 48-bit millisecond timestamp.

How it works

Generation combines the current timestamp with 80 random bits, encoded in Crockford Base32; decoding reverses the timestamp portion to a date.

  1. Enter your input. Type or paste your input into the field above — the tool responds instantly.
  2. Review the result. Output updates live as you type. Everything runs entirely in your browser.
  3. Copy or download. Use the Copy button to grab the result, or Download to save it as a file.

Examples

Time-sortable IDs

Generate ULIDs — 26-character, Crockford-base32 IDs that sort by creation time, ideal for event streams and audit logs.

Common mistakes

Sorting across the same millisecond

ULIDs share their timestamp prefix when generated in the same millisecond; the random suffix keeps them unique.

Frequently asked questions

Can I decode a ULID back to a timestamp?

Yes — the first 10 characters encode a 48-bit Unix timestamp in milliseconds.

ULID vs UUID v7?

Both are time-ordered; ULIDs use Crockford base32 and are shorter, UUID v7 follows the standard UUID format.
