What is Average Sentence Length?

Average sentence length is one of the two measurements every readability formula is built on, and it is the one a writer can act on. The trap is that the average alone hides the problem: two texts can both average eighteen words a sentence while one is a steady eighteen and the other alternates between five and forty, and it is the second that reads badly. That is why the mean is reported with the median and the distribution rather than on its own.

How it works

Sentences are split with the category's shared splitter and each is tokenised for its word count; the mean is total words divided by sentence count, and the median is taken from the sorted lengths so a few very long sentences move the mean without moving the median. A histogram buckets the sentences by length, and the five longest are listed with their text so the outliers can be read and split rather than only counted.
