Pages per Hour Calculator
Convert a timed reading into pages per hour, with seconds per page and works per sitting.
What is Pages per Hour?
Pages per hour is the reading-speed measurement for people who plan in pages rather than words, which is most people studying, revising or working through a set text. It is also the figure that reveals the trap in a page-based plan: pages are not a constant quantity of text. A page of a textbook with figures and margin notes can hold 250 words while a page of a novel holds 400, so a pages-per-hour figure only transfers between texts that are set the same way.
How it works
Pages are divided by the elapsed time in hours, and the reciprocal — seconds per page — is reported alongside it, because the useful planning figure is usually the per-page time rather than the per-hour rate. A table then applies the measured pace to the reading blocks people actually have, from fifteen minutes to two hours, showing how many pages each block covers. Because the pace depends on the setting of the text, the tool also reports the words-per-minute equivalent when a word count is available, so a figure taken from one book can be checked against another.
