What is Compose Check?

A structural validator for Docker Compose: it checks that services exist, each has image or build, and that sections like volumes/ports are well-formed.

How it works

The YAML is parsed and inspected against compose conventions: services must be a mapping, each service needs image or build, and ports should be a list.

  1. Enter your input. Type or paste your input into the field above — the tool responds instantly.
  2. Review the result. Output updates live as you type. Everything runs entirely in your browser.
  3. Copy or download. Use the Copy button to grab the result, or Download to save it as a file.

Examples

Stack sanity check

Validate a docker-compose.yml for valid syntax, required service fields, and version-specific key names before you run docker compose up.

Common mistakes

Deprecated keys

Compose v2 dropped several v1 keys. The validator flags deprecated or unknown keys with the current alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Does it validate environment variable syntax?

Yes — malformed interpolation like ${VAR and stray quotes are reported.

Can it check image references?

It checks the image key's shape (name:tag), not remote availability.
