Garden Bed Calculator
How many plants fit a bed on a square grid, from the tag's spacing.
What is Garden Bed?
Plants are spaced on a grid: the tag's spacing is the clearance each plant needs around itself, so the count is floor(length ÷ spacing) × floor(width ÷ spacing). Rounding up — or counting the half-gaps at the walls — overcrowds the bed, which shows up as mildew and competition two months later. Offset (triangular) planting fits roughly 15% more, but only where thinning will actually happen.
How it works
Each dimension is divided by the spacing and floored — a plant closer to the wall than its spacing has no clearance — and the two counts multiply. The rows, per-row count and area per plant are shown so the layout can be staked out with string before anything is bought.
