Soil Calculator
Soil for raised beds and planters — bags or yards, at the depth roots need.
What is Soil?
A raised bed's volume is its footprint times fill depth, but two practicalities bend the number: vegetables want 8–12 inches of root run, and bagged soil settles 10–20% after the first watering, so the bag count rounds up rather than exact. Filling the bottom third with cheap fill or logs is common practice — good soil goes where the roots are.
How it works
Length × width × (depth ÷ 12) gives cubic feet, dividing by 27 gives yards, and dividing by the bag size (1.5 or 2 ft³ are standard) gives bags, rounded up. The depth note and settle guidance are on the page because the arithmetic alone under-orders real beds.
