Mulch Calculator
Bags or yards of mulch for a bed, at the depth that actually suppresses weeds.
What is Mulch?
Mulch is spread 2–3 inches deep to suppress weeds and hold moisture; deeper than 4 inches starves roots of air. It is sold in 2 ft³ and 3 ft³ bags or by the yard for bulk delivery — and the crossover point is around 25 bags, after which bulk is both cheaper and less carrying. The maths is area × depth, but the depth is where gardens go wrong, so the guidance sits next to the input.
How it works
Area × (depth ÷ 12) gives cubic feet; dividing by the bag volume and rounding up gives bags, or dividing by 27 gives yards. Keep mulch off trunks and stems: the note on the page is short because the maths is simple, but the two failure modes (volcano mulching, too-thin spreading) are worth naming.
