What is Mode?

The mode is the value that appears most often. It is the only measure of centre that works on categorical data — the most common shoe size, the most frequent rating — and unlike the mean and median it can be ambiguous: two or more values can tie, and a list where every value appears exactly once has no mode at all.

How it works

One pass builds a frequency count, the highest frequency is taken, and every value that reaches it is reported. When that frequency is 1 the page says "No mode" rather than naming the smallest value, because "nothing is more frequent than anything else" and "this value is the most common" are different answers and only one of them is true.
