What is Midrange?

The midrange is halfway between the smallest and largest values: (max + min) ÷ 2. It costs one addition and one division, which is why it appears in weather records and quality control, and it is the most fragile of all the measures of centre because it sees two numbers and ignores the rest.

How it works

Both extremes come out of the same sorted pass that produces the mean and median, so the page can put the three side by side. When the midrange and the mean are far apart, the data is either skewed or has an extreme value — the comparison is the reason to look at this measure at all.
