Classroom & Teacher Utilities

Pick students and build groups, teams and seating charts from your class list; run a lesson timer or a bell that rings at the end of the period; roll dice and draw numbers; and work out late penalties and rubric totals. Every list stays in your own browser, and seating charts, group lists and question papers print straight from the page.

About Classroom & Teacher Utilities

Classroom utilities have one job: to make a decision in front of a class that nobody can argue with. That is why every randomiser here is a genuine permutation — the students who go in are exactly the students who come out, nobody dropped and nobody duplicated — and the test suite asserts that directly rather than trusting it. Picking is done without replacement by default, so a class of 28 is exhausted before anyone is chosen twice, because pure random picking can call the same student three turns in a row and that is exactly the unfairness a picker is supposed to remove. Grouping deals round-robin so sizes stay within one of each other, the team generator snake-drafts by rating to keep team totals close rather than only counts, and the seating chart treats keep-apart and keep-together pairs as constraints to satisfy — scoring random layouts and, when a constraint genuinely cannot be met, naming the pair that clashes instead of quietly printing a broken chart. The timers count down to a fixed deadline rather than decrementing, so a throttled background tab cannot make a lesson bell late, and the chime is synthesised in the browser with no audio file to fetch. The grading helpers avoid the two mistakes hand-arithmetic makes most often: a late penalty is computed from the original score and then capped, rather than taking a percentage of what is left, and a rubric percentage is earned points over available points, so differently weighted criteria are combined correctly. Class lists persist in your own browser between lessons — never uploaded, no account, and every printable result has a dedicated print stylesheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is my class list uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser, and a class list you type is saved only in this browser's local storage so you do not have to retype it next lesson. It is never sent to a server — which is also why the tools work offline after the first visit, and why clearing your browser data clears the list.

Why does the picker avoid repeats instead of picking purely at random?

Because purely random picking can select the same student several turns in a row, which feels unfair even though it is chance. The bag keeps the students who have already been chosen out of the draw until everyone has had a turn, then refills and reshuffles — so over a lesson the turns come out even.

What happens if my seating constraints cannot be satisfied?

The tool tries a few hundred random layouts, scores each against your keep-apart and keep-together pairs, and keeps the best. If none is perfect it says so and names the pair that still clashes, so you can decide which constraint to drop rather than finding out when the class walks in. Anyone who does not fit on the grid is listed separately instead of being dropped silently.

Can I print the results?

Yes — seating charts, group lists, teams, spelling lists, number sheets and quiz papers each have a print stylesheet that hides everything else on the page, so the printed sheet contains only the chart or list itself. For a question paper, the answer key prints as its own block.

How is a late penalty supposed to be calculated?

The deduction is taken from the score the work originally earned, then capped at your maximum, then subtracted: 10% a day on work worth 84 points removes 8.4 points a day. Calculating the percentage from the running total instead would remove less each day and quietly disagree with the policy in your syllabus. The result is never allowed below zero, and the day-by-day ladder shows what each extra day costs.
